5 Worst Things to Do When in a Car Accident
(1) Don’t walk away without exchanging information.
With smart phones this has never been easier. At the very least you can snap a picture of the other party’s license plate and insurance card, minimizing any confrontation with the other party or parties. Without this information it may be very difficult or impossible to make a claim against the party at fault for the collision.
(2) Don’t forget to call the police.
It is highly recommended to call the police, especially if someone is injured or there is extensive property damage to one or more vehicles. The police will often fill out a detailed traffic collision report and may even assign fault at the scene of the accident. This can be very helpful when making a claim for your injuries and damages.
(3) Don’t forget to take pictures.
Photograph the damage done to your car, the other party’s car, and any bodily injuries you sustained, such as cuts or bruises.
(4) Don’t neglect your health.
A car accident can be a very stressful ordeal physically and emotionally. If you notice aches and pains that were not there before the accident, it is always worth seeing your doctor. Understandably, this can be difficult due to your busy schedule, and it is not always easy to take time off work to go to numerous medical appointments. If the accident left you without a car, juggling doctor’s appointments will probably be even harder. Still, don’t ignore your health. The effects of an auto accident can be long lasting.
(5) Don’t go it alone.
Insurance adjusters are trained professionals who are often incentivized to settle cases as quickly and cheaply as possible. Every company has goals. Don’t think the insurance company is any different. Despite the catchy jingles and TV ads, the insurance company is not on your team. They have tricks up their sleeve and often use your lack of knowledge about the insurance process to their advantage. If you are in an accident it is highly recommended to contact an accident attorney.
